The lens

What happens inside the lens

The frame is chosen, the lens is calculated. Six families, six ways of making sight sharp, and what each one changes in the glass itself.

1. Single vision One power, the same across the whole surface of the lens. For distance, or for reading, depending on the prescription. One power, one thin even edge.
2. Progressive Three zones on one lens: distance at the top, near at the bottom. Between them a corridor that carries the eye from one to the other. The corridor appears, the lower sides go soft.
3. Degressive An office lens: near at the bottom, intermediate at the top. The corridor is wide, for the screen and the paper, not for the road. The corridor widens, distance goes.
4. Photochromic The glass darkens in daylight and goes clear again indoors. One pair for the street and for the desk. The glass darkens with the light.
5. Polarised A filter laid inside the glass cuts reflected light. The glare of a wet road, of the sea, of snow, goes. The reflection goes.
6. Blue light A coating that sends part of the blue of screens back. It shows from the outside: the lens keeps a violet reflection. The coating's reflection turns violet.
